In unit four, I learned that there are twelve tenses that will be taught in this course and that there are four tenses for each “time” (present, past, and future). It has been a long time since I have reviewed the specific grammar rules for any of these tenses and I was able to be reminded of the characteristics of each present tense in this unit. I learned that verbs of mental activity, feelings or emotions, involuntary senses, and possession are not used in the present perfect form and that also certain verbs are not used in the present perfect continuous form. I can understand how choosing the correct present tense can be daunting for non-native students of English because they must memorize the rules of each tense before they naturally can reproduce them. I also realized that the present tense is used much more frequently than I originally thought it was because it is used for headlines, directions and instructions, commentaries, and other such commonplace capacities.
