Unit three taught me to try to seek variety in my lesson plans. It gave good tips on how to engage the students and keep them interested in lessons by following the Engage-Study-Activate (ESA) methodology. This unit also taught me about prior models of language learning and their perceived benefits and failings. This introduction of other methods helped me to see why the ESA model is a better model than some others. Essentially, the ESA model seeks to first make English language learners comfortable with engaging in the lesson by utilizing some of their prior knowledge, then it allows them to study and learn new material, and finally asks students to activate their language skills by practicing what they learned in a safe and practical exercise that will also challenge them to include the grammar and vocabulary they already should know. Therefore, the ESA model is an amalgam of many of the individual goals held by other models. I am excited to learn about a model that wants to achieve high student participation through a combination of both fun and practical exercises.
