Unit 19 Teaching Special Groups Teaching beginners For me, it's one of the most rewarding groups to teach. It feels so good when you can hear them start talking in English, making their first sentences, reading and such. Techniques I’ll mention the ones I’ve seen to be highly efficient in my classes. Have a realistic goal. Some of my colleagues think that all students need to learn the same things at the same amount of time. This is no longer the case, the ESL trend says that students learn at their own pace and the teacher is more of a guide than a rigid instructor. Be as visual as possible. Oh yes, literally! I even have to dance to make students learn what I’m trying to say and resist the temptation to speak to them in their L1. Control your language. Using language that matches their level makes it so much easier to learn vocabulary, improve listening skills and remain motivated. Don’t use their L1. This is actually very good, because they find the way to say it in English. Teaching Individual Students In a 1-1 lesson the student is usually highly motivated, making it easier to program my classes. Also, I can focus to bring up the student from a particular English level to the next. Teaching children I teach children at my school from 5 to 8 years old. And I agree on you taught me in this unit. They are very curious, less self-conscious about their mistakes, need teacher’s approval and have the shortest attention span from the other teaching groups. Discipline: Be consistent with the rules. Be on time to all the classes. Be kind. Threatening, raising up my voice or physical harm is not permitted. ESP This was a very helpful part of the unit since I teach Business at my school to high schoolers. Things to do in order to prepare the lesson. Get an idea of the client’s English level. What the students want and what they need. Bear in mind that students can be motivated but tired at the same time. Be prepared with all the needed materials. Keep a record of attendance. Post-course report.
