In this unit, I learned about different kinds of equipment and visual aids that can be utilized by teachers in the ESL classroom. Many of the types of equipment mentioned are obsolete and unused because of new technology. However, technology can sometimes be troublesome and not work when you need it to, so always have a backup plan prepared. Also, make sure you know how to use the technology beforehand because in the middle of a lesson is not the time to learn how to use something.
An essential part of the classroom has always been the board, whether it be a whiteboard or a blackboard. I prefer a very clean and organized board that students can easily follow. I believe it is important to write on the board rather than always having materials premade with notes so that the lesson is paced at a manageable rate. Furthermore, the students can get used to reading handwriting and see the differences between handwritten and typed letters. The basic principles of board work are essential for teachers will be helpful in the future. I learned valuable aspects such as a teacher should have a plan beforehand as to what is going to be on the board and when and unnecessary capitalization should be avoided since it can be difficult to read and cause confusion. In the future, I will be able to maximize the usage of the board by following these principles.
