This unit deals with some of the different types of groups that a teacher may have as students. These may be groups of beginners, young learners, adults looking to learn English relevant to their profession, monolingual or multilingual classes, or even one-on-one sessions. Each of these groups are described given their likely abilities and objectives as it relates to learning English, as well as some of the advantages and disadvantages likely to be encountered when teaching. For example, a teacher may enjoy the high degree of motivation often (though not necessarily) seen with adult students learning business English; however, difficulties with tiredness or somewhat slower learning may be encountered with older students. Ideas for effectively interacting with each of these groups are outlined.
