Sooner or later, teachers are likely to come across special groups of students that require slightly different skills than those we have looked at so far in this course. Teaching beginners can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of teaching English. Beginners can be broken down into five types: absolute beginner, false beginner, adult beginner, young beginner, and beginner without Roman alphabet. Teaching beginners requires special skills and psychology. Teaching individual students has seen increased demand in recent years in the EFL industry. The course can be specifically geared toward the student with one on one lessons. Individual lessons have a number of advantages over teaching groups such as: no mixed levels, usually highly motivated students , needs can be clearly defined, a close relationship with the student can be developed, etc. Teaching individuals also has some drawbacks like lack of classroom dynamics. Teaching children can be challenging and rewarding for teachers. Children are usually curious and like to learn new things. It is important for teachers to provide patient repetition, positive encouragement, and frequent praise so the child develops a sense of self esteem and is less self-conscious about potential mistakes. Children typically have a shorter attention span than adults, so activities should be short, varied, and fun. There are more disciplinary problems that arise with children. The behavior and attitude of the teacher is perhaps the single most important factor in a classroom that can have a major effect on discipline. Business English or English for specific purposes (ESP) is gaining popularity world wide. English for specific purposes involves teaching English to professionals who need to know specific language to do their jobs. Lessons should be targeted to the specific language needed in the students' field of business. It often involves areas such as telephoning, introductions, presentations, etc. It should be remembered that teachers are there to teach English and not business. In a multilingual class, students are from various countries and have no common language except English. This can be an advantage for teachers as students are forced to communicate with each other in English and not their native language. There is also a good variety of culture in a multilingual class. Monolingual classes usually take place in the students' home country and cannot offer the same advantages as a multilingual class. However, it is likely that the students will have the same difficulties with English whereas multilingual classes will have different problems and difficulties. I learned a lot about teaching special groups during this unit. I would like to experience both teaching English one on one and teaching small classes of adults. I think it is always important for teachers to build a good rapport with students and gear lessons toward their interests. It is also important for teachers to keep in mind why the students want to learn English and practice ways to keep the students motivated to get as much exposure to the language as possible. It is good for teachers to peak the students' interests, always encouraging outside reading, listening, and communicating in English.
