It is important for teachers to evaluate students as a means of providing them with ongoing feedback and information they need to evaluate their own level and progress. Teachers can assess a student's language level through using tutorials, evaluations by students, and tests. Tutorials are a way of evaluating students by reviewing work done, discussing the aims of lessons, discussing how well the students performed tasks, whether there were any problems, etc.. Tutorials can be done with the whole class or on an individual basis. Evaluation by students can be done by means of a questionnaire, or a guided discussion. The results of the survey can then be discussed and future lessons considered in light of the student's comments. This process promotes genuine interaction, develops a much greater awareness among the students of what is happening in the classroom, and the teacher better understand how the students react to what the teacher does. Tests are often appropriate at different stages in a course. Placement tests are designed to enable teachers to place a student at the appropriate language level according to what they already know. Progress tests should be used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered or acquired. These tests are useful to let students and teachers know what language items need more work and teachers can design future lessons accordingly. Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of a course to see what the students already know and to help teachers prepare lessons and materials that will enable students to work on the identified areas of difficulty. Practice tests are to prepare for external, formal examinations. These tests should be structured in the same format as the formal test that will be written. External tests are used for achieving certificates for higher language levels, to get a job that requires English to be spoken, to be able to become a citizen of an English speaking country, to name a few examples. I learned a lot about evaluation and testing during this unit. Evaluation and testing is part of the process of giving on going feedback to students. It's good for teachers and students to know what aspects of English present the most challenges so lessons can be designed to be well focused and effective to the needs of the students. I think it is important for teachers to include tutorials, evaluations, and tests in lessons on a regular basis. I feel students like to know where to stand so they can improve in the areas they most need to while learning to speak English.
