Testing is a tool used by educators to gauge a learner's level. There are different types. formal, informal and for different purposes. Placements tests determine the correct level of class. Progress tests determine the learning and what has been retained or needs to be restudied. There are formal exams for different purposes such as university entrance and business level that are run by outside organisations. Student assessment and review of a course is also useful to determine the effectiveness of the course. Teachers may write their own or use those already made. Practice tests in the same format as the formal test is important.
