This section was about teaching receptive skills: reading and listening. These skills, in addition to productive skills (speaking and writing) are all equally important to learning a new language. There are two motives for learning receptive skills: for a purpose or for pleasure. The reading and listening skills can be broken down into even more specific skill sets: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, searching for detailed information, and being able to deduce from context. Although it may be a complex process to teach all these skills, there are many things that teachers can do to make it easier for students to improve their reading and listening skills. It is important for teachers to select texts that are appropriate to the level of students and it is important for teachers to also pre-teach vocabulary words that might be more of a challenge to the class' capabilities. In order to retain student engagement while teaching reading and listening skills, teachers should choose a variety of topics that will interest the students.
