This chapter taught me about how to maintain a classroom with regards to the physical classroom space and with regards to students' contexts. I find two main things to be extremely necessary to effective class maintenance: patience and enthusiasm. The non-verbal communications of a teacher are almost as important, if not more so, than what is actually being said. When it comes to English learning, especially with lower level students, small things such as hand gestures and eye-contact can make all the difference to their understanding of the lecture. When giving a lesson, and especially when giving instructions, it is crucial that the teacher keeps their words simple to ensure that students understand them. It is extremely important for teachers to start off on the right foot with students. Coming off as "not strict" or unpunctual can be detrimental to a teacher's rapport. It is better for a teacher to establish discipline in the beginning of the program with the correct balance of relaxed guidance. The physical set-up of a classroom can also greatly affect the learning abilities of the students. It is important to consider the culture, class size, age, and proficiency level of a classroom in order to arrange the furniture in a way that is conducive to the learning objectives. For example, a class of thirty or more students may be difficult to organize into a circle-shaped classroom arrangement. On the other hand, making a small group of five students sit in orderly rows may seem awkward and might be less effective for student participation. This chapter also talks about the reasons behind student misconduct and the various ways a teacher can effectively deal with disruptive students. In these situations, it is crucial that a teacher maintains her temper while also being just with the treatment of the student.
