Evaluating the students is an important part of the teacher's job, therefore testing is a vital part of classroom work for the students and the teacher. Different types of tests serve specific purposes that will determine language level and progress of the students. For example, at the beginning of a course, a placement test will give the student and teacher an idea of the student's proficiency in the language and what class level they should be placed in. This is helpful for the student to have a basis for what they know and need to work towards and helpful for the teacher to know while going through the course. Similarly, a diagnostic test can help the teacher prepare lessons and materials that are best suited to the needs of the students based on the results. A diagnostic test is like a placement test, but ultimately more extensive, giving the student and teacher a finer level of detail about the student's language skills. Progress tests are a natural part of development in the classroom. The teacher would do well to have progress tests periodically throughout the course to make sure that the students are absorbing the information and remembering things from past units. A progress test is also a good challenge for the students to motivate them to study and keep up with their learning. Practice tests can be helpful for the students to gauge if they are prepared for an external examination. The practice test would be in the same format of the exam they are preparing for, but there is no risk of failure, the sole purpose is for preparation for the student. External examinations are usually specifically catered to specific categories of English use, such as business English or a basic skill set to immigrate to an English speaking country. These examinations are not typically taken at a language school, but can be prepared for in language classes.
