Course books almost always have a role in the classroom and should be utilized to their full advantage by the teacher. While course books play an integral role in the classroom, they should be balanced with other materials either chosen or created by the teacher. A teacher can choose from authentic or created materials. Authentic materials can seem more interesting as they come from real world sources where the language is used, such as a newspaper or a song. They need to be selected with care that they are not too far above the language level of the students, but also provide them with a good challenge. Authentic materials help build confidence in students to use English in a setting outside the classroom. Created materials are also beneficial in the classroom. The teacher can create them for the specific needs and level of the students. Authentic and created materials are good ways to supplement coursebooks in the classroom. Coursebooks come with a set of advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand they can provide a good mix of grammar and vocabulary work, the lessons build on the previous ones which is good for continuity and progression. On the other coursebooks have the potential to dictate the lesson enough to allow the teacher to neglect other creative ways to teach the lessons. The teacher should consider how to balance the coursebook within the lesson as a whole. A good idea to start is to do some research on specific difficulties the students' might face when learning English, based on their native language. Some options for using a coursebook involve omitting certain lessons that might not be relevant, replacing lessons with more appropriate material, supplementing the lessons with outside material, and adapting the material to in the teacher's own style of teaching. There are many factors that go in to analyzing a coursebook to decide if it is right for the class. Some of things to consider would be the methodology used by the book and if it can be used in ESA style lessons; the syllabus, if the book goes over the right language points for the students' level; and does the teacher's guide provide enough information and help for what the teacher may personally require.
