Unit 15 focused on evaluation and testing. This unit reminded me of a course I took in college, “Effective Assessment.” There are various types of tests that can be utilized in language schools that provide useful information for both teacher and student. A diagnostic test, which can be provided at the start of a course or a new unit, is used to see what the students already know about the given topic. Progress tests are often given based on the school or teacher’s discretion. Progress tests examine the student’s four skills, as well as grammar and vocabulary that was only covered within that specific period. Oftentimes, I give a progress test after each unit, although I informally assess the students throughout the unit/semester. Informal assessments that I often use include games, writing on whiteboards, thumbs-up/thumbs-down, or the program Plickers. Plickers allows students to answer questions digitally. Furthermore, there are also external assessments that are not offered at language schools. There are a variety of assessments geared towards different levels. For instance, the Cambridge Assessment is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Cambridge Assessment offers certificates for ESOL students at an elementary level (KET), preliminary level (PET), advanced level (CAE), and/or a proficient level (CPE). Furthermore, it offers certificates for life skills as well as business. Assessments are an important tool for both educators and learners, as they provide feedback regarding areas of strength and areas in need of improvement.
