The two videos of sample lessons were like night and day. In the first video, the teacher did not try to make the students comfortable and went straight into teaching. What really struck me was that he did not even know their names. When asking questions, he mainly pointed, or chose the students who he knew, repeatedly. His pace was very quick and he was using vocabulary that was unfamiliar to the students. Furthermore, he was unprepared. He was constantly reading his notes, he wasn't familiar with the lesson, and he did not explain the instructions for the worksheet. He had a negative attitude toward the students and often belittled them if their answers were incorrect. The students lacked an understanding of the lesson and were often confused. When the camera zoomed in on their notes, their notes demonstrated a lack of understanding. They were also often behind. His pace was too fast. As a native English speaker, even I felt lost! During the activate phase, the teacher did not explain the rules for the game and consumed most of the talking time. At the end of the lesson, he simply walked out, so there was no sense of closure. In the second video lesson, the teaching was much more effective. The teacher immediately made the students feel at ease because he introduced himself and continually had a smile on his face. He appeared to enjoy his job, so the students were more likely to enjoy their time in class. He engaged the students by building on their previous knowledge and then during the study phase, provided the students with models, charts, and visuals to help them better understand the concepts and tasks. He broke the concepts up into smaller steps, color coded important words, and explained contractions and complicated concepts. He uses realia and real-life examples to help make the content meaningful. The students' understanding of the lesson was maximized, as evidenced by their structured notes. During the activate phase of the lesson, the teacher provided examples and made sure the students understood the concepts. The game was student-oriented and the students were doing most of the talking. The teacher was also engaged and walking around. He then ended the lesson with closure, by encouraging the students to reflect. By watching the two videos, it is clear that a teacher's attitude and preparation can deeply impact the effectiveness of a lesson and the overall environment of the classroom.
