Evaluations are an important part of any teaching environment. Evaluation is essential to creating groups, monitoring them, and tracking progress. There are many different types of assessment and evaluation. Placement tests are given in the beginning in order to form groups appropriately. We can also use them to learn more information about a student, his/her level, and his/her motivation for learning English. Diagnostic tests are more extensive and given at the beginning of a course in order for the teacher to prepare adequate lessons that meet the students' needs. Progress tests are given throughout and should assess all four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They are vital to ensuring that the students are progressing and that the method of teaching is working for them. Practice tests are good for helping students prepare for any external exams they may want to take outside of the language school, such as the TOEFL exam. The Cambridge exam as well is one that could be practiced. It was interesting to read about the different components of the Cambridge assessment because I was not previously familiar with them. I didn't realize that there are so many different kinds depending on the aim of the student. For example, in General English alone, there are elementary, intermediate, certification, advanced, and proficiency exams. This does not even include life skills and business English exams, of which there are others, as well. Overall, it was nice to learn about the different kinds of evaluations, how they should be used, and the various external exams that students may be interested in taking.
