As with the receptive skills, it was intriguing to learn more detailed information regarding speaking and writing. I agree that writing is usually the least taught skill, although very important. I learned that it is important to teach writing through lessons involving spelling, handwriting, and punctuation. While these things might come naturally to native English speakers, they are surely difficult to learn, especially English spelling. In my opinion, this is one of the most difficult things because English is not a phonetic language (as it said in the text). I agree that issues in this area could lead to many embarrassments or even misunderstandings. However, i had never previously considered that English handwriting could pose a problem for students whose native language does not use the Latin alphabet. That's a great point for me to keep in mind. Also, I learned a lot from the section on the difference between accuracy activities and fluency activities. Accuracy activities aim to have the students produce correctly, while fluency activities have to do more with the flow of the language, and less with accuracy as long as the produced language remains effective. Both are important and necessary at times in their own way. Overall, the largest thing I believe I will take away from this unit is the importance of writing and not to overlook it while also teaching the receptive skills and the productive/expressive skill of speaking; all four are equally important and should be treated as such!
