It was really shocking to me to watch the first video and how the teacher treated the students. In the first lesson, he was extremely disrespectful; he didn't care about their names and did not take any time to explain the content or develop a lesson properly. He appeared extremely unprepared, disengaged, aggravated, and uninterested. A couple times, he was even on his phone or looking out the window when he should have been engaged with the class and monitoring their progress. Also, when students gave incorrect answers, he made them feel bad, which caused them to feel uncomfortable and not want to participate. His directions were minimal, if any. Overall, I felt really bad for the students because they could tell that he was rushing (at the end he even walked right out). In the second lesson, it was much improved. He used the students' names frequently, making them feel like an important part of the classroom community. He also used various real life examples that were relevant and gave plenty of visuals, examples, and demonstrations to aid in their understanding of the content; he even used color coordination. It was very clear that the students felt much more comfortable and wanted to participate more. The activities in the second lesson were also more geared toward student talk time. While in the first lesson, the activate stage allowed only one student to say a short statement, the second lesson allowed for the students to participate more and engage with one another. In the study portion, it was the same. The students in the second lesson were able to work in pairs and really use the language more frequently while working on the worksheet, which is to their advantage. The teacher in the second lesson was also smiling and looked interested in the students and their progress. He monitored them and listened to their pronunciation individually, not just collectively. Overall, it was difficult to watch the teacher in the first lesson be so disrespectful to the students. He (obviously and clearly) did a much better job in the second lesson, where he made every student feel valued and involved everyone in the activities.
