This unit focused on modals, phrasal verbs, relative clauses and the passive voice. Modal auxiliary verbs are used before other verbs to add emphasis to the main verb. Modals can be used to express many different ideas, such as obligation, possibility, permission, ability and advice. Modal verbs can also be used to express differentiating degrees of formality, such as the differences between "Can I..?" and "May I...?" There are many phrasal verbs, and there are three main types of phrasal verbs. The three categories are intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable. Intransitive phrasal verbs cannot be followed by a direct object. In a transitive separable phrasal verb, an object pronoun can only come between the verb and the particle or an object noun can come between the verb and the particle, or after the particle. Transitive inseparable verbs allow the object phrase or object pronoun to come after the particle. There are three types of clauses, a dependent clause, an independent clause, and a relative clause. There are two types of relative clauses, defining and non-defining. A defining relative clause makes clear what is being spoken about, while non-defining clauses have non-essential information included. The passive voice is the second voice used in the English language, the other being active. The passive voice focuses on the subject and not the agent. The auxiliary verb 'to be' is included in the form before the past participle. The passive is used most frequently when information is unclear or unknown.
