This unit reflects on the grammar of conditionals and reported speech. Conditionals are sentences that contain 'if' for expressions of 'when' in past, present and future possibilities. There are five main conditionals, which are zero, first, second, third and mixed. Zero conditionals refer to actions or facts that are irrefutable. First conditionals talk about future situation that are possible, once the condition has been satisfied. The second conditional is when an unreal situation that is unlikely to ever come to fruition. Third conditionals refer to past action or non-actions and the hypothetical result. Mixed conditionals refer to hypothetical past actions and the present results. The second major subject taught was direct and reported speech. Reported speech is when the direct speech of another is reported to a third party, most likely resulting in a tense change. The present verb tenses change into their past counterparts, while past verb tenses stay the same.
