This unit focuses on pronunciation and phonology in the classroom and different tactics we can use in our lesson plans. The lesson proves that an effective teacher will want to focus on pronunciation, and how to properly manage different mouth structures. Phonology is the study, analysis an classification on sounds, which helps teacher with teaching individual and connections sounds. The main reason a person is learning a new language is to be able to communicate, so pronouncing the words correctly and effectively is important. Intonation is the pitch and volume in a whole sentence, while stress is focused primarily on individual words. Understanding intonation and stress patterns in speech will help learners understand the expressions attempting to be put across in the conversation. There are two different fall patterns in speech, fall/rise and rise/fall. Each have their own purpose in a conversation. If a sentence has a rise/fall intonation, then the speaker is either agreeing, finished, asks a questions, or is giving instructions. The fall/rise intonation usually occurs whenever there is a surprise or disagreement in the conversation. There are many techniques for teaching intonation, some of them being by hand gestures or on the board. Stress is more complicated because there are different forms of stress, but all multi-syllable words in English have parts that are stressed. Stress is difficult to hear and reproduce for a learner because the stress is placed differently in other languages. The important thing to tell the students is that in most cases there will more often be conversation with unstressed syllables than stressed. The different ways to teach this in the classroom can be by repetitive out loud work, choral work, or stress marks. Articulation is also important when teaching pronunciation, but using peer dictation, visuals, symbols, or your own mouth in a lesson can help the students. Teaching pronunciation is important, but it is up to the teacher when, where, and how frequently to teach it.
