In this unit, I learned about potential classroom problems, and several ways to cope with them. I learned about the challenges that come with a brand new class versus a pre-existing class. Existing groups already know each other and the way the class is run. New groups are more unfamiliar with everything. When teaching a first lesson, teachers should avoid a grammar heavy lesson and focus on establishing rapport and getting to know the students and their needs. The use of the students' native language is another problem that comes up frequently. As I teacher, I should always speak in English and encourage my students to try their best to do the same. Sometimes students need a little bit of warming up before diving into grammar-heavy sections. Hang-man, pictionary, or other games are a good way to get the class ready for English. When students are reluctant to participate in class, you can implement partner work to encourage them to speak. You can also give them time to practice or record things at home.
