The unit covered the aspects of testing and evaluation of students ability and progress throughout a semester or school year. There are many different types of tests, such as, placement, diagnostic, progress, practice, and external tests, and each has its own unique application. For instance, placement tests are usually given during the start of a course in order to properly group students by level. They are progressive in difficulty and cover all four skills. Diagnostic testing is used to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses. It can also help a teacher plan material needed in the future. Progress tests are used to track progress; they are generally mandated by most language institutions. Practice test can be used for revision or preparation for external efficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge series tests. These external test are necessary for entrance in English speaking universities and required by some international businesses.
