After reading this chapter, I have learned that productive skills through speaking and writing are substantially different, however they serve the same function which is to communicate. In teaching it is very important to ensure that you are engaging the students and giving them a reason to want to listen or say something. Through speaking there are different types of activities to take place, like controlled activities where the language is controlled by the teacher through drilling. This is done by using the word or phrase in repetition known as the '3 by 3' drill. Guided activities also aids in the process which requires a little more creativity and productivity. Another form is Creative communication like role-play, discussions, debates, simulations and even making up some communication games. The other form of productive skill as mentioned earlier is the skill of writing. Even though they both serve as means of communicating the writing skill takes on differences making it that different from speaking. The handwriting is a very important and personal issue as students whose native language uses different alphabetical systems from the English Language and this for them can pose a challenge. Spelling can also create misunderstanding but can often be perceived by the reader as a lack of education. This can be evident because spelling in English is made difficult as words will have the same pronunciation but written differently eg. there, their or even written the same but pronounced differently for eg. read, read. Games in the classroom is a creative and interactive way of having the students engaged to meeting a goal of accomplishment whether it be through a competitive manner to be the first to reach the goal or corporative, working together towards a common goal.
