Unit 15 provided an overview of the various types of tests within the ESL community. Before starting an ESL course, students are likely to take a placement test or diagnostic test. The placement test will determine at what English level the student is currently while a diagnostic test does that and also helps the teacher create lesson content for further dates.. After placement has occurred, the next step is to gauge the progress of the student and progress tests do just that. If students are studying for external exams such as TOEFL, then practice tests done within the class can help prepare students for what is to come.
