This unit examines the different ways of evaluating students' language skills: tutorials, evaluation by students, tests. There is a wide variety of tests that can be used before, during and at the end of an English language course. For example:
- Placement tests = used at the start (to form groups of students at the same level)
- Diagnostic tests = at the beginning (to evaluate what the students know and don't know)
- Progress tests = used periodically (to measure improvement over time)
- Practice tests = are given in preparation for external examinations.
To be effective, testing must be addressed continuously throughout the entire course. Selecting the testing method that suits the purpose and deciding when it should be employed, will determine the overall success of the teachers' program.
