Unit fourteen addresses the "pros and cons" of the use of course books in English language teaching, stressing that although they can be very useful, the teacher will often need to create supplementary materials and/or replacement sections more specifically tailored to the needs and interests of his/her particular student group. Authentic and created materials are contrasted and discussed. Examples of several types of created materials are included. The unit concludes by summarizing the best uses of course books and suggesting how to analyze a book's appropriateness for one's particular class.
