Unit thirteen broaches aspects of pronunciation and phonology in English language teaching, thereby addressing what for me has always been the greatest challenge in learning foreign languages (particularly French, German not so much). Important aspects include intonation (variations in volume and pitch in a whole sentence) and stress (emphasis on individual words and/or syllables, as well as the particular difficulties presented by sound joining and linked speech. Phonemic symbols embodied in the international phonemic alphabet and an overview of articulation, with appropriate teaching techniques, cap off the unit.
