Large classes can be a struggle for teachers, especially when there are different language abilities in one class.
Some students are very shy or don’t have confidence in their English abilities, so calling on students outright without any preparation may not be a good teaching strategy. Give them time to prepare before making them speak individually in front of the class.
Monolingual students often want to try to slip back into their native language and will try to talk to their classmates and the teacher in their native language. The teacher should try to get the student to try to speak in English even if the teacher is multilingual.
