This unit was about Teaching Receptive Skills: reading and listening. These two pillars are the main entrances to learning a foreign language and they are considered to be of the same importance. Reading is a lot easier than listening because you have the text in front of you and you can write down any new word, find its meaning right away and understand the text. While with listening you have to double your activation skills, you have to focus more and listen carefully to what is being said. Your learning skills are better enhanced with listening according to my opinion. Teacher of English would tell us to listen to BBC radio all day so that we could grasp everyday English vocabulary and our ears "could get used to it'. Most of Albanians have learned Italian through television, only by listening even though we might not know grammar or how to write it correctly. The role of the teacher in teaching receptive skills is important. The activities related to these phases should vary and be interesting. During our English class at the university, we would listen to a lot of tapes and then discuss about what we had listened and would do several grammar exercises. If students have a good start in receptive skills, their productive skills will be much better.
