Every classroom has tools and resources in order to help the teacher convey to the students what they want them to learn. There are many resources that teachers use outside of the classroom as well, in order to help them prepare for future lessons. Unit 17 lists various resources that teachers use in the classroom, as well as explanations about how they’re used. One of the primary tools that most teachers have is the board. It can be a chalk board, white board, or smart board. It is at the front of the room, so it is a good tool to keep student’s attention and to convey important information. On that note, in order to ensure an easy to understand lesson which flows well, teachers should know beforehand hand what they will write on the board. In this unit, I learned that teachers should make a plan of their board work ahead of time on a piece of paper. That way they’ll have a guide of what they want to write, where, and when. This is also helpful to make sure that different classes get the same information, and that the teacher doesn’t forget to write something in class. An essential tool for most students is their dictionary, whether it is in book or electronic form. Students aren’t expected to know every word, so looking up words and discovering their meanings is often an occurrence in class. When people think of language dictionaries, they often think of them being from the foreign language to the first language, or the first language to the foreign language. However, only using these dictionaries does a disservice to our students. In this unit, I learned that teachers should provide and highly encourage the use of English to English dictionaries. When students use these kind of dictionaries, they learn more about the language in the target language. It also prepares them to have a higher level of fluency, since it is very rare to have someone provide the language learner’s home language definition when they ask what a word means in natural conversation. There are many tools that teachers and students alike can use in the classroom. It’s also important for teachers to keep in mind how and why these resources are used, so that students can get the most benefit. Even the most useful tool can become a distraction if the teacher is unprepared to use it, or uses it in an ineffective way. The benefit to the students should be considered carefully in the use of classroom tools and resources.
