This unit provided a detailed introduction to phonology, including theory, examples, and methods for teaching. Intonation patterns, phonemic symbols, and mouth diagrams were all provided, along with manners of articulation. There were also questions on the task sheet using the phonemic symbols.
This information was very worthwhile, and I believe I'll try to use some of it with my classes. I had never truly considered a methodical approach to teaching pronunciation and have simply relied on drilling. I hope this unit will help my students.
I also found the phonemic symbol questions aggravating and enlightening. Their importance is certainly highlighted, while also showing that making students try to read the symbols outright is frustrating and ineffective.
