Speaking and writing are equally important when learning a language, and as important as as developing receptive skills. We should work on students' accuracy and fluency but have to know in what phases we should include them and how. There are different speaking activities in the classroom, and the teacher has to prepare before the lesson bearing in mind what he/she wants to focus on and what activities are to be used to develop the skills most effectively. The teacher has to encourage students to speak, and what I found particularly important is to have plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency activities. This is important for a number of reasons. On one hand, students need to practise in the controlled and guided manner to perfect some words or structures as much as possible, and then, as they become more confident, they can more freely engage in speaking and will be more fluent. Also, we should never forget that activities need to be purposeful and meaningful, and we should change the dynamics in the classroom to keep students interested in what we are learning. We should also provide them with feedback so that they know what they should improve or work on more. There are different aspects of writing skills and all are to be equally addressed and dealt with. This is something we should always have in mind, especially when working with students who come from different cultures and have different backgrounds.
