I have learned about the different roles the teacher has. We usually assume that a teacher is there to control, organise and correct, but there are other roles that are equally important and should not be neglected. Also, the differences among students regarding their age, culture and background are something the teacher should always keep in mind as this can help him or her teach better and more effectively. And of course, being sympathetic and caring: it does not matter whether you are teaching adult or young learners, start with a big smile and the learners will respond in the same way.
