In this unit the importance of teaching receptive and productive language skills taught me that, speaking and writing is just as important as reading and listening. These skills and the use of them to comprehend context and everyday life greatly depend on a pre-existing knowledge base of English.
I have also learned that we read and listen either for a purpose, eg. to study, or for entertainment, eg. listening to music for relaxation, in a range of different ways. We scan for specific information, we predict context through headlines and introductions, we skim for a general idea or we make deductions from words or phrases to see past the literal meaning.
By choosing relevant and entertaining and varied topics will spark interest in your students and the sometimes difficult task of comprehension becomes easier. A good comprehension task should not be too difficult nor to easy but instead be a challenge that is realistically achievable.
