What is the NET Scheme for teaching English in Hong Kong?

The NET (Native-speaking English Teachers) Scheme is a long running program that recruits foriegn teachers and is operated by the Hong Kong Education Bureau. Through the program qualified teachers from across the world are placed into state run schools to work as English language teachers. Every year, hundreds of teachers are recruited via the scheme to work in primary or secondary level schools. The mission statement of the program is to share and promote innovation in teaching practice, and to provide an authentic classroom environment for local students. Successful applicants receive a generous salary, several extra benefits, and the opportunity to live and work in one of Asia?s most vibrant destinations.

What are the requirements for the NET Scheme?

Applicants need to be native or near native English speakers. If accepted by the program you have to commit to a two year contract with one specific school, starting at the beginning of the new school year in August. The scheme is open to all age groups, however, it should be noted that the mandatory retirement age in Hong Kong is 60 meaning applicants must be no more than 58 years old at the start of their contract.

What teaching jobs are available through the NET Scheme?

The NET scheme has two separate areas. One area is for primary level teachers known as PNET and the other is for secondary level teachers known as SNET. In the PNET scheme you will work with students aged between six and twelve and have a typical class size of 30 to 37. To qualify you will need a degree in English, a qualification in primary education, and TESOL certification. If the required number of teachers is not reached, those with a lower level of qualifications will be considered. In the SNET scheme you will work with secondary level students with an average class size of 40 to 45. To qualify you will need a degree in English or education, a post-graduate diploma in education, a TESOL diploma, and at least one year of teaching experience. If recruitment numbers at this level are low then applicants with fewer qualifications will be considered. For further information, please visit the official NET Scheme website.

What are the benefits of the NET Scheme?

Successful applicants will receive a monthly salary of between HKD 25,000 and 60,000 (currently $3,200 to $7,700 US). This figure is based on relevant teaching experience. On top of the monthly salary, you will also receive other benefits such as:
