What are TESOL course hours?

Even a quick bit of online research will reveal that there are many different options for TESOL certification, all with a varying number of study hours. Unfortunately, as each course provider is free to design their own courses, it can be hard to know which course is the right fit for you. A good place to start is to decide what you want to achieve with your TESOL qualification?

What are short-format TESOL courses and who are they aimed at?

Many people are drawn by the opportunity to spend time helping others by volunteering as an ESL teacher. In many countries there is a need for qualified teachers to provide English language instruction that will help disadvantaged people to find jobs within the tourism industry or other local businesses. The skills and knowledge necessary for this type of position are covered in short-format TESOL courses.

What are standard length TESOL courses and who are they aimed at?

A standard length TESOL course is generally considered to be at least 100 hours in length. This type of course is typically required to apply for full-time paid teaching jobs. Our 120-hour TESOL certification course covers all the main topics a teacher needs to get started on their international teaching career. If you want to be even better prepared for life in the classroom, our in-class TESOL certification course also includes extensive teaching practice. ITTT has in-class courses available in dozens of countries around the world that provide a minimum of 120 hours of face-to-face training on teaching theory, as well as 6 to 10 hours of observed teaching practice.

What are advanced and specialized TESOL courses and who are they aimed at?

By adding a diploma level certification to your CV/resume you will instantly expand your job prospects and potentially increase your salary. Our 370-hour Diploma in TESOL course will give your teaching career a huge boost before you even set foot in a classroom. Another way to boost your job prospects is to add a specialized TESOL course to your portfolio. The two main specialized areas of ESL teaching are teaching business English and teaching young learners. To get started in these particular fields of education you can complete one or both of our 50-hour specialized TESOL courses. These courses are designed to carry on from what you learned during your standard TESOL certification course.

Can a TESOL course be completed quicker than advertised?

Although most TESOL courses are labeled with a certain amount of study hours, this figure is not fixed by any means. The time it takes to complete any particular course is very much dependant on the individual trainee. If you are extremely motivated and have plenty of time to put into the course, it is certainly possible to complete it in less than the average stated time.
