How much can I earn teaching English in Thailand?

Due to its popular culture, entertainment options and delicious cuisine, Thailand is always a popular choice for teaching English abroad. There are plenty of job options year-round in the capital Bangkok, as well as other popular destinations such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya. Previous experience is often not required, so it is particularly popular with newly qualified teachers and those who are looking for a more relaxed environment to live and work.

What are TESOL salaries in Thailand?

A large number of people choose to teach English in Thailand due to its laid-back lifestyle, however, the average salary is typically quite low in comparison to some other countries in Asia. First time teachers can expect to earn around $1,000 per month which should cover your everyday expenses. If you have previous experience and a high level of teaching qualifications you might be able to earn up to $1,500 per month which should allow for a more comfortable lifestyle. It is rare for teaching jobs in Thailand to include extra benefits such as paid airfare and housing.

Who are the main employers of English language teachers in Thailand?

A large number of jobs are found in government run public schools right across the country. However, you will need to be a native English speaker with a 4-year degree to be eligible for these positions. Although a TESOL certification is not an official requirement, having one on your application form may increase your chances of landing a more sought after position and a higher salary. A typical working week includes 40 hours attendance from Monday to Friday, with a class of anything up to 50 students. Salaries vary depending on location, but most will be around $800 to $1,000 per month. Another popular option is to teach in a privately run language academy. These often pay a little more than public schools, particularly if you have previous experience. The number of teaching hours range from around 18 to 25 per week, with most classes being in the evenings and at weekends. Student numbers are generally no more than ten per class. These positions usually pay an hourly rate rather than a fixed salary, with rates ranging from $8 to $20. Depending on the number of teaching hours you are given and the hourly rate you agree on, you could earn anything from $600 to $2000 per month.

Who else employs English language teachers in Thailand?

Private international schools offer another more lucrative option for teachers who can meet the tough criteria required to land them. A high level of teaching experience and qualifications are usually required and you can expect the competition to be very strong as these positions are highly sought after. These schools typically follow a foreign curriculum such as British or American and operate a standard Monday to Friday timetable. Salaries can be anywhere up to $4000 per month for the lucky few who can get them.

What is the cost of living for English teachers in Thailand?

The cost of living in Thailand can be vastly different depending on the area where you live and work. Bangkok is roughly 30% more expensive than the average for the country, as are some of the more popular beach resorts. If you choose to work in these areas you should look to earn at least $1,000 to $1,300 per month to provide a comfortable lifestyle. In less developed regions you can get by on much less, although how you choose to spend your free time will obviously have a big impact on this.
