There are four main categories of English teaching programs that we will consider here: For each program, we will have a look at who they are for, what they generally involve and anything else of particular note. Who the program is for: This is the type of English taught in government schools and private language institutes throughout the world. We will take a roughly historical perspective as we look through the different methodologies for teaching English, from ancient past to current day. Named after the method used to teach the “classical languages” of ancient Greek and Latin and is often called grammar translation. There is a heavy focus on grammar such as verb conjugations and language rules. Also called the “natural approach” which is intended to copy the way we learn our native language naturally.   The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a system designed by the council of Europe to provide a standardized method of comparing levels of language proficiency represented by the different examinations and assessments throughout Europe and other areas. The system can be used in conjunction with any European language and divides proficiency into six separate levels. Each level of the framework has a description of the abilities needed to achieve that level in speaking, reading, writing and listening skills.
