This unit tackles the theories, methods and techniques in teaching a language, their features and drawbacks.
In my teaching experience, I usually use different approaches depending on who my learners are and what my teaching conditions are. Although I have already used different approaches, it's still quite difficult for me to choose which approach to teaching is the best. I'm glad to learn from this unit an effective method, the 'ESA'-Engage, Study and Activate. It's an approach that is simple yet a flexible one. The order can be varied accordingly and we can have many sequences within the lesson. In addition, I have learned varied 'engage', 'study' and 'activate' stage activities that I find interesting and fun not only for me as a teacher but also for my students.
Mistakes can be a very positive aspect of learning. They show that learning is taking place and that learners are taking risks with the language. There is a range of correction strategies and techniques we can use to indicate that there is a mistake, and the ones we choose depend on a number of different factors, for example the aim of the activity, the age of the learners and the language level of the learners. Giving feedback should be balanced, focused and helpful. In the classroom, teachers give feedback to motivate learners, to encourage learner autonomy and to help learners understand what their problems are and how they can improve.
