This unit focuses on teaching receptive skills, which are reading and listening. These skills are typically utilised either for a more serious purpose or for entertainment. Readers and listeners employ specialist skills such as prediction, scanning, skimming, understanding detailed information, and deduction from context. When working on receptive skills, it can be useful to pre-teach vocabulary that is essential to understanding the text, so that the students can feel comfortable and confident in the activity. The unit also includes an outline of a typical receptive skills lesson using the Patchwork ESA format, which was the most useful part of this unit for me since it provides an example that can be applied to other lesson plans.
