Similiar to the present tense, there are four different forms of past tense. They include the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect, and the past perfect continuous. The past simple is difficult as many verbs have irregular tenses that do not just simply add an -ed to the end of the verb. There is no rule that helps students know which verbs are regular and which are irregular. Past continuous describes something that gradually occurred in the past and uses an -ing at the end. Past perfect is used to describe actions that occurred in the past before other actions. Finally, past perfect continuous is used to talk about events in the past that have likely continued up until the conversation.
