This unit addressed Phonetics and Pronunciation. Pronunciation typically doesn't get much attention in TEFL, since Applied Phonetics is rarely taught in schools and Universities and this leads to teachers not being confident enough to teach it to their students. Proper pronunciation goes to build student confidence in their communication skills, so teachers should make every effort to teach it. Pronunciation hinges on Intonation, Stress and Rhythm. These are best addressed through drilling practices and repetition. We also look at the various speech organs and areas of the mouth and the way they impact the sounds made. This is best taught through gestures, drawings and drilling where whole or part of the lessons can be devoted to teaching these or else it may be handled as and when required.
