UNIT 20 - TROUBLE SHOOOTING COMMON PROBLEM SITUATIONS FIRST LESSON In the first lesson a teacher will be faced with meeting new classes for the first time therefore its vital to establish rapport with the students and set the tone for the rest of the course. Moreover they will need to find out the students needs aspirations with English ,the English level of each individual student;weaknesses and strengths. All this will enable the teachher to tailor the course to meet the needs of the students. This can be done in in a number of ways like through Questionnaires/surveys,communication activities which encourage players to share something about themselves, needs analysis etc. WARMERS These are usually short ,fun, communicative activities designed to get students motivated and using English. They are important as they get students to be more comfortable and also helps to establish rapport between both students and the teacher. Examples of warmers; -Hangman -Pictionary -Tongue twisters -Memory games 2.DIFFERENT LEVELS Its possible that students in the same class may have varying different English levels therefore its the teachers responsibilty to try and find a way to make this work for all the students and meet their different needs. Tips: 1.Use different materials 2.Same material, different tasks- Stronger students will get more complex tasks while the weakers ones will get less complex tasks. 3.Dont do anything 4.Pair stronger students with weaker ones. 3.LARGE CLASSES Tips to handle large classes 1.Use worksheet 2.Pair/group work 3.Ensure you are clear when talking and board work is also visible to everyone 4.Choral repetion - To get all the students involved. 5.Appoint group leaders to ease the burden of class management on the teacher. 6.Be creative,a large class is often dynamic and dramatic so use this to your advantage with regards to class activities. 4.USE OF NATIVE LANGUAGE To avoid cases where students resort to using the native language always ensure that instructions are clear and if not repeat until students understand ,the activities should also be at their level .Only respond to English, also it should be known by the students that English is the only language to be spoken in class even if it they make mistakes its still acceptable. 5.RELUCTANT STUDENTS Useful ways to encourage participation ; -Use plenty of pair work. -Use controlled practice. -Use role play. -Use tape recorder.
