This unit focuses on the different types of students an English instructor might teach. English teachers can have beginner students, individual students, children, business people or students who are learning English for another reason, as well as monolingual and multilingual classes. Beginner students can cover a varying group of people, some are absolute beginners, while others might be false beginners. The difference between the varying level of beginner students is their knowledge and experience with the English language. An adult beginner might have more motivation than a young beginner, but their ability to pick up the language tends to be more difficult. There are also beginners who have an entirely different alphabet, so the the students will need to work on basic literacy skills. The differences can vary, but there are many techniques to helping teacher successfully maneuver their way through the class. Teachers need to have realistic aims, as well as pacing out their lessons. Patience and revision are the teachers biggest tools with beginners. Individual student's lessons tend to be less formal and have a number of advantages for the teacher, such as high motivation and clearly defined needs. This also allows the teacher to become closer to the student, which can help through out the lessons. Goal oriented activities and short stories are some of the activities that can be done. Teaching children can be tiring, but extremely worthwhile. Teachers should use English the entire time of instruction, speak slowly, and be patient with the children. They can become bored easily so being aware of the time and how long the activity has been going on is important. Business English or ESP students tend to vary in age, skills, and motivation. Referred to as clients, business clients have different purposes for English. The type of language these learners tend to require are telephoning skills, introductions, presentations, etc. A "needs analysis" should be the first task done so that the teacher can understand what the clients need and to prepare the course as such. Mid course evaluations should be conducted as well. This can give you credibility to the individual client, and allows the teacher to see how the course is coming along. Monolingual classes tend to take place in their home country, so the avoidance of the mother tongue is extremely necessary. Multilingual classes tend to be in foreign countries, containing many different nationalities and languages. This makes it easier for them to use English, since it will be the common language of the class.
