Unit 9 evaluates the use of course books and lesson materials. I was able to identify the two groups, authentic and created materials, which course materials can be divided into. Authentic materials include newspapers, songs, movies and anything a native speaker would listen to or read (Page 2). Created materials are produced by the teacher to assist or replace materials from a course book and these materials can include crosswords, flashcards and gap fill activities (Page 3). I learnt that authentic materials may not be suitable for beginners as they are not designed for EFL students, therefore teachers must be careful with selecting authentic materials for a lesson (Page 2). I also learnt the advantages and disadvantages of using a course book. The main point I was able to establish in regards to using a course book is that you should not solely rely on it, but use it as a guide and integrate other creative materials to supplement it (Page 14-15).
