This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
It was helpful to go through a review of english grammar, especially the tenses. It helped me to enter sympathetically into the trouble the Koreans have with its twists and turns and endless exceptions. The formation of lesson plans, particularly the ESA model and its variations, was difficult to practice, but it helped me to think through the 'flow' of a given lesson; and after I started teaching in July, that framework helped me keep my sanity. Another thing that was helpful was the emphasis on the use of multiple methods and materials to reach different learners and to keep an edge of excitement in the classroom. This requires a lot of the teacher, because the books provided often do not 'fit' the students' challenges. Having some ideas and background to be able to abandon the text for the sake of student engagement has been empowering.
