This unit has highlighted previous methodologies and their respective strengths and weaknesses. Then it continued to explain the creation of ESA lesson planning by Jeremy Harmer. He combined many strengths from previous methods to create a well rounded and effective approach to teaching English. ESA stands for Engage, Study, Activate, and these are the names of the stages, as well as the description of what each phase is proposed to do. Engage is meant for enhancing student interest and to get all students involved and speaking/thinking in English usually in the form of fun games such as "Fizz-Buzz" or other alphabet games. The Study phase is aimed at eliciting the current language point from the students and includes board work and worksheets or drills to check for understanding. Finally, the Activate phase emphasizes the realistic application of the knowledge learned in the lesson as well as drawing on the previous knowledge of students. The Activate activities include role play and group discussions. Harmer realized the potential for the ESA lessons to become predictable; he therefore created alternate versions of ESA, such as Boomerang Lessons and Patchwork Lessons. A good teacher must utilize all forms and understand the abilities of his students to maximize their potential.
