The knowledge garnered from this lesson is very applicable to our everyday life. There are 4 basic skills in a language: Reading and listening which are collectively termed receptive skills and speaking and writing which are termed productive skills. We don't just read and listen without a motive. We read and listen for a purpose for example to achieve a particular goal such as passing an examination. We also read and listen for entertainment for example reading s novel. Understanding from reading and listening depends on:
1. Predictive skills
2. Scanning for a specific information
3. Detailed information
Skimming for a general idea
4. To be able to deduce from the context
As with any thing else, there are challenges with reading and listening. There might challenges with the language, a topic that is not spellbinding which causes boredom and lack of interest. In order to have successful receptive lessons, teacher must choose material that captures student's interest, build interest before reading and listening, pre-teach complex vocabulary and also have flexible materials.
