As with everything, effective pedagogy requires an adequate balance between rigidity and liberality in practice in order to master the language. In this regard, the productive language skills require a reasonable balance within isolation and correction and liberality for creativity. It is my own conviction -- based both upon my own experience of learning foreign languages as well as teaching English as a foreign language that it is usually effective to err on the benefit of giving students more opportunity for creative expression of the language and dedicate lesser time to isolated correction. In this regard, apply a 60-40 rule -- allowing students a slight majority of time to actively produce the language in speaking as well as writing contexts and lesser time to correct and drill. Language is only truly apprehended when production is an ongoing process with isolated times of 'steering' in the form of correction.
