This Unit was all about how to manage your class. It offered ideas on how to better your class using eye contact and gestures, seating arrangements, discipline, giving instructions, and establishing rapport. I personally think establishing rapport is the most important aspect of managing a class. As a PCV, when I first moved to my final site placement, before I even started any teaching, I participated in community activities and made sure to show my face around my village. I got to know a lot of people that way, and even if they were too old to be my students, they would get their children involved in my classes. As the year progressed and there were more community events to attend, I went to all of them and had a fantastic time with all of my students. (I almost never cooked, my students and their families always invited me over for meal times). I think it was because of this that I never had any discipline problems and my classes were very relaxed and we were able to joke around with each other. It was a very intimate and safe atmosphere because I took the time to know my students and their families.
